DETOX RECIPES

It's easy to detoxify your body with healing foods. There are many foods and herbs that detoxify that may be sitting right on your kitchen shelf or in your refrigerator and you can add them to your diet every day for healthful body cleansing and added vitality.

NOTE: If you are about to begin a serious detox program, make sure to do a thorough colon cleanse before attempting any vigorous detox! It is vital to cleanse residual waste matter from the body before beginning a liver detox to purify the blood. Not doing a thorough colon cleanse beforehand can put a strain on the liver and make you feel worse than before.

Detox Drink

Here's a detox juice drink
that I make for myself
and it takes me only a few
minutes to mix in a blender.

To a blender, add:

8 ounces orange juice
4 ounces pure water
1/2 cup cut-up banana, strawberries
or yogurt
1/2 inch slice of ginger (do not remove the skin!)
1 small garlic clove
1 tablespoon flax oil
1 tablespoon lecithin granules
1 tablespoon squeezed lime juice

YOU MAY ADD OR SUBSTITUTE:

a tablespoon of protein powder
a spoonful of spirulina powder
a tablespoon of Coral Calcium powder
(when adding powdered items you may
add a little extra water or juice)
lemon juice instead of lime juice
olive oil or Omega-3 oil instead of flax oil
apple juice instead of orange
blueberries instead of bananas

I prefer the orange juice to apple, because the thick pulp seems to make a smoother drink.

I also make sure to add water to the 8 ounces of juice because otherwise the drink comes out much too thick. Sometimes I splash in a little rice milk for added flavor.

Experiment with this recipe to find the drink you prefer. It gives me a real added boost in the morning or whenever I drink it, and I feel cleansed inside too! Just mix - stir - enjoy!

Liver Flush

Before you cleanse, make sure to clear out the colon. If there is food stuck or blocked in the colon it must be flushed out first. This may be accomplished by getting colonics (colonic irrigations) which are performed by health professionals such as nurses. Or you can do an enema at home with a prepared over-the-counter enema preparation from your drugstore. An enema will however cleanse mostly the lower colon or rectum, and will not flush other parts of the colon. You can find colon-cleansing products from your local health food store. At any rate, some colonic cleanse should be taken, and also drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily. Eating a light diet consisting of mainly fruits and vegetables will also help to prepare your body for the cleanse.

NOTE: If you suspect that you have GALLSTONES, do NOT do this cleanse! Get an ultrasonic check-up from your doctor first. This information is not intended to take the place of conventional medical care. Consult with your doctor before beginning any kind of detox program or diet.

NATURAL BREAST CANCER PREVENTION

Raw Foods Detoxification

A diet rich in raw foods assists the natural detoxification process and also provides many nutritional benefits. Why? Raw foods are in their natural state, uncooked and unsoftened. They are more fibrous, which is important because fiber helps to remove sticky waste from the inner lining of the intestines. That's why a high-fiber diet is so frequently recommended. It not only cleanses the colon, it also guards against arterial "sludge" and clogging.

Raw foods also provide more nutritional benefits than most cooked foods. Cooking can deplete certain water-soluble vitamins and minerals from foods, whereas foods in their raw state provide the whole complete nutritional value of the food.

We caution against a raw food diet if you are in an extremely weakened condition. It takes more energy to digest many kinds of raw foods, so check with your doctor or nutritionist if you are considering a raw food detoxification diet and you have a chronic debilitating condition.

Here are some recipes for raw food flax crackers, which are good for your overall health and make an excellent in-between snack!

Recipe For Raw Food Flax Crackers by Mark Ament

Outside of the fact that they taste great, there are two other major benefits to eating raw food flax seed crackers.

First, flax seeds are high in dietary fiber. They contain 28 grams of fiber per 100 gram serving. That's just under the recommended daily intake of 30-35 grams of fiber per day. Dietary fiber is important for proper bowel function and strong digestion.

Second, raw flax seeds contain flax seed oil, which is high in omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. Omega fatty acids are linked to improving brain function, decreasing wrinkles and boosting energy.

Here's my favorite recipe for raw food flax crackers - Italian style:

Tools you need: Food Processor with “S” blade, Grinder, Dehydrator

Ingredients:
2 cups Flax Seeds
1 cup Ground Flax Seeds
1/4 cup Nama Shoyu, Tamari or Bragg’s
3-4 T finely chopped Italian herbs to taste

Preparation:

In a large bowl soak whole flax seeds in 4 cups distilled water and nama shoyu or tamari for 4-6 hours. After soaking mix in ground flax seeds, herbs and extra water if necessary. The consistency should be like a thick almond butter.

Spread the mixture evenly on dehydrator trays about 2-3 mm thick. Dehydrate at 40-45 C (110-118 F) for 6-8 hours then flip over to dry the other side for another 2-4 hours until desired crispness is achieved.

Special Teachings:

You can make flax seed crackers of different flavors simply by changing the spices and herbs you add before putting them in the dehydrator. For Mexican style flax seed crackers add cumin, cilantro and chili powder. For Indian style add curry and turmeric. I also enjoy flax seed crackers with finely chopped parsley, onion and garlic added.

One other point about flax seeds: there are two common varieties, brown and golden. Brown flax seeds are sometimes called linseeds and are more readily available in most parts of the world. Golden flax seeds have a richer taste, and slightly less dietary fiber.

Five-Day Liver/Gall Bladder Flush

Here is a five-day liver/gall bladder flush that will really help restore your vitality by purifying and cleansing the organs and blood:

1. From SUNDAY breakfast through FRIDAY lunch:

  • Eat a light, healthy diet consisting mainly of fruits and vegetables for the duration of this program. In addition to 64 ounces of pure water, drink at least one quart of apple juice or apple cider a day (preferably organic).  Why?  This much apple will soften the sludge that can build up in the gall bladder.  The job of the gall bladder is to emulsify fats, but when it is backed up with waste matter and sludge it will not do its job, contributing to gas, bloating, GI tract discomfort, heartburn, etc.

Avoid fried and fatty foods such as French fries, meats, pork, McDonald's

2.  3 hours after Friday lunch:

  • Dissolve 3 teaspoons of epsom salts or disodium phosphate into an ounce of hot water and drink it down.  You may chase that down with grapefruit juice as it is very salty. Eat nothing else for the rest of the day Friday.

3.  2 hours after the above on Friday:

  • Repeat Step 2.  Drink plenty of water.  The drinks are very salty but they do clear a pathway for bile and sludge to pass through without getting stuck anywhere.  It's a good idea to drink grapefruit or lemon juice at this time, because it helps to alkalinize the body (detoxifying can cause a temporarily acidic condition in the body and this will balance that effect).  If you cannot drink citrus fruits, you can put a half teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of your drinking water.  Or you can find alkalinizing products at your health food store, like Glyco-Thymoline.

4.  Before going to bed Friday night mix a half cup of unrefined olive oil with a little lemon or grapefruit juice and drink it down (I know, I know ...)  If this makes you feel queasy have a few sips of Coke to settle your stomach.

5.  Last step, hooray!  When you go to bed lie on your right side with your right knee pulled up to your chest for a half hour.  This helps the processing of oils via the stomach so that the gall bladder will be prepared to receive them.

When you put your leg down again after the half hour, the gall bladder will have a little tension squirt of bile through it, and you may feel this - some people have reported that they do feel a tugging sensation in that area.  Then, go to sleep!  By then, you will want to!

6.  First thing next morning (Saturday), dissolve two teaspoons of Epsom salts in two ounces of hot water, add a bit of lemon or grapefruit juice.  Drink this and eat nothing for about two hours afterward.  The purging action of this will get the sludge out that was released last night from the gall bladder.

This cleanse is best accomplished when you are not extremely active, making plans or socializing!  You will want access to a bathroom and you may feel like not doing much at all.  Sometimes cleanses are accompanied by headaches and light headedness.  This is part of the cleansing process (headaches most often relate to the liver function and you are giving that function a major push as well as major support).  The temporary discomforts are greatly outweighed by the long-term benefits you are giving your body by removing the built-up intestinal sludge and junk which contribute to intestinal toxemia.

Strawberry Detox?

I have to admit, the idea of eating strawberries to help the body detoxify was a new one to me. The fruit portion of this treat contains high levels of vitamin C and helps to remove harmful free radicals from the bloodstream! Any food or herb that removes any potentially toxic bodily substances qualifies as a detoxifying agent.

Free radicals are the by-product of any kind of charbroiling meat or food, and they also are by-products of metabolic processes in the body. In excess, free radicals can cause damage to cells, accelerate aging, and create arterial clogs. They are counteracted by high levels of antioxidants, such as those present in citrus, leafy green vegetables, and fruits such as strawberries. Strawberries also contain bioflavonoids, which minimize the effect of free radicals and assist the immune system.

To honor this latest member of our Detox Foods and Herbs list, I located an interesting recipe for a strawberry mousse dessert shown below. Yes, one can enjoy detoxifying foods in desserts and mousses too! I have not tried it yet, but if you do, let me know!

Strawberry Dessert

Ingredients:

1 pound roughly chopped strawberries
1 cup silken tofu
1/2 outer rind of orange peel
1 tsp. honey

Drain tofu and place it in blender or food processor. Add strawberries, honey and orange peel and process until smooth. Spoon into a dessert dish, refrigerate for 20 minutes, enjoy!

3-Day Apple Diet

Here is a cleansing regimen recommended in the medical readings of Edgar Cayce, the famous trance medium of the 20th century whose "channel" provided a wealth of information about nutritional healing.

As always, this 3-day diet should be preceded by about 7 days of eating a light, nutritional, junk-free diet.

For the 3 days of this diet, eat only:

  • Fresh apples, any kind, preferably organic

  • Pure spring water

  • Pure unfiltered apple juice, preferably organic
  • Applesauce, preferably organic

  • Baked apples of any kind

  • Apple cider vinegar

  • Cold-pressed olive oil

  • You may eat as much as you want, and make sure to drink at least 64 ounces of water.

Upon arising on Day 3 of this diet, quickly drink 1/2 cup of olive oil and flush it down with apple juice. Then drink a small amount of water or apple juice into which a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar has been mixed. You may resume a normal diet beginning in the morning of Day 4.
